REDONDO BEACH, Calif. -- Redondo Beach lifeguards on Thursday night wrestled with a naked man who swam out to sea to evade police, reports CBS Los Angeles. It was unclear what the man was wanted for, although the man fought every attempt to be taken into custody.

According to the station, the incident took place around 10:20 p.m. in the waters off Catalina Avenue and Coral Way. Twenty minutes later the fight was still ongoing. The suspect and lifeguards appeared to be hundreds of feet offshore.

It was unclear if the man entered the water naked or ditched his clothes in an attempt to make it harder to capture him, reports the station.

CBS Los Angeles reported that after a vehicle pursuit, a car had crashed into a wall near where the water-wrestling incident occurred, and that one suspect from the crashed vehicle was taken into custody.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the other man, who fled into the water, was eventually brought ashore. That suspect's mother, the paper reported, told police her son had been hearing voices the last couple of days, telling him the world was coming to an end.

The man was taken to a hospital, where he underwent a psychiatric evaluation, Redondo Beach Police Sgt. Mario Fizulich told the newspaper.

It's believed he was also involved in the pursuit that ended with a crash, and he's being charged with a hit and run, Fizulich said.
