NOGALES, Ariz. (CBS/AP) - A trucker transporting watermelons from Mexico made a longer than expected pit-stop, when authorities arrested him for toting an alleged haul of 9,500 pounds of marijuana, to go with a little fruit.
According to the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol in Arizona, officers seized the not-so-secret stash of pot -- 390 bales of it -- after the driver stopped at the Mariposa port of entry for an agriculture inspection Tuesday afternoon.
Officers said a drug-sniffing dog led them to the drug stash in the trailer of the truck, and from the looks of it, the watermelon seemed like an afterthought. The marijuana has an estimated street value of more than $21 million.
The 40-year-old driving the rig could only be identified as the worst smuggler ever and has been turned over to Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials.
